URGENT: TOEFL Changed in January 2026

The NEW 1-6 Band Scoring — What It Means

The old 0-120 scale is gone. TOEFL now uses 1.0-6.0 bands aligned with CEFR (A1-C2). Here's what each band means for university admission.

5.5-6.0

C1/C2 — Proficient

Ivy League / Top 20 universities. Full operational command.

5.0-5.5

B2+ — Competent

Top 100 universities. Effective use with occasional inaccuracies.

4.0-5.0

B2 — Independent

Most graduate programs. Functional command.

3.0-4.0

B1 — Developing

Conditional admission; may require English support courses.

Transition Period (2026-2028): Score reports show both old (0-120) and new (1-6) scales. Universities accept either. The old 100/120 correlates to approximately 5.0-5.5 on the new scale.

The NEW Speaking Section — What You Must Know

Task 1: Listen & Repeat

What happens: You hear 7 short sentences (each linked to a visual). You repeat each one exactly as heard. No preparation time. 8-12 seconds per response.

Coach's Secret: This tests verbal memory and pronunciation precision. Small slips are recoverable — never pause to apologize. I'll drill you on this until it's automatic.

Task 2: Take an Interview

What happens: AI-powered interview on one familiar topic. 4 follow-up questions. No preparation time. Response time: Up to 45 seconds per answer.

Coach's Secret: Use natural openers: 'I'd say that...', 'One reason I feel this way is...', 'I recall a time when...'. Always give a reason AND an example.
